A New Microsoft Office Is On Its Way

Microsoft has big news! Thursday, October 11th is the official ‘RTM’ date for the new Office. RTM stands for Release to Manufacturing, which essentially assures Microsoft will now be in a position to release their new version of Office within the next 6 months.

The RTM date for Microsoft means they are finished coding and testing within their own labs and are now ready to release their new software suite to the general public. The new office will be released in two versions, one which is a traditional software package entitled Office 2013, and a new cloud-based version called Office 365. Microsoft is hoping to have their new products available within the first quarter of 2013.  Office 365 enterprise clients can download the new update by mid-November, as will volume licensing clients with software assurance, and developers and IT professionals that have a TechNet, or MSDN subscription.

A 90-day preview for anyone interested can be found at office.com/preview. The new version of Office will be more cloud-based, as Microsoft is expecting the majority of consumers to utilize Office 2013 through purchasing Office 365. The default save location when utilizing any of the Office 2013 applications will be to Microsoft’s Sky Drive. Sky Drive is cloud based storage for users with up to 7 GBs free storage. Other features of Office 2013 will be a new, sleeker ribbon interface, much improved touch capabilities, and resume reading in Word and Powerpoint, among others.

Office 365 will be Microsoft’s answer to the highly popular Google Docs. If you are interested in the capabilities of Office 365 and the new Office 2013, call us at 480-644-0802 and we can answer all of your questions.
